JOE GETS HIS "GRAND MARCH"

Society trojan (I am describing his labours rather than any equine resemblance)  Joe Johnston finally achieved his wish
with the performance of a Grand March befitting of this Great Occasion St Andrew and 120th Anniversary Year of the
Dover & East Kent Scotish Society.  Joe has wanted to do this for some time but for various reasons it has not been
attempted for some time.  I think it was a master stroke - Grand March into an Eightsome Reel - and everybody
took part - I think it was great.

A new committee member's perspective :
"As a new committee member I was surprised at the amount of hard work which goes into making events such as the
St Andrew's Dinner Dance such a success.  There are regular committee meetings (once a month) and the Secretary has
to ensure that the Dover Town Hall is booked, the caterers are booked and menu and prices agreed and that we have
music and guest speakers. Tickets and programmes then have to be produced.  Irene should be congratulated and deserves
great thanks and praise for doing a splendid job in achieving this.  The Treasurer, Veronica, has been ever present at Committee
Meetings (even when Husband Neil was circumnavigating the Globe) ensuring that funds were available and allocated
correctly. Veronica does a great job as Treasurer and again deserves our thanks for ensuring we remain solvent and the for the work
she puts in.  Iain had the great idea of celebrating the 120th year with a small gift for members and guests and the miniature
hip flask key rings were the result.  Well done Iain for these and his stirling work in obtaining such a good price and also with
organising raffles etc. Jane was a very welcoming committee member at the opening of the Dinner Dance and also puts in a lot
of work for the Society and also takes responsibility, along with Iain for raffles etc.  Margaret is also ever present at the meetings
and puts in a lot of effort for the society, including clearing up after all the events - she was still at the hall well after 1 am
with the rest of the Committee . Special mention for Norma who supplied and made all the heather brooches for the ladies
attending the Dinner Dance, delivers a great Highland Cathedral and is a legend on the dance floor.  Norma is also ever present at
meetings and does a lot of work for the society and is deserving of great thanks and praise.  Further special mention also to
Joe, our vice president, who works so hard to ensure all events, especially the main ones, are as much of a success as
possible. He also deserves the greatest of thanks and appreciation.  Then to our President, Neil, who mentioned some personal
disappointment in missing some meetings due to P&O Ferries changing his plans at short notice, but I am sure you will all agree
that he is an excellent president and does a lot for the Society - including hosting the main events, printing, including the Wee Bletherer
and more. Although, I am new to this, I think he is proving to be great choice for President in this 120th year and he should not worry as
we all understand that work comittments have to be met.  I am now appreciative of the work my own father, Harry, used to do
being a regular committee member over the last 43 years. Harry still likes to try to do as much as he can, supporting Joe as MC
and serving as the Burns Federation representative and I am proud to be attempting to follow in his footsteps.
In finishing, it has opened my eyes to the hard work of this committee, all of us were clearing the hall at well past 1.am and we
hall had jobs to do to try to ensure this was a success.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and even if a little nervous in delivering my maiden
speech, still enjoyed that part too".  Graham Hutchison
